I’ve already said in a previous post that our health and our bodies in general are a gift from God. If we squander our health we do a disservice to ourselves and the Holy Spirit who lives in us. God commands us to treat our body, mind, and soul with extreme care. We are to glory God in that process. It’s so important we understand this concept, because what you are putting in to your body is something that we should be mindful of, because it can have affects that lead us to the wrong direction. What do I mean? Anything that is not pleasing to God or glorifying Him is the wrong direction. Yesterday’s scripture from Corinthians said, “Just because something is technically legal doesn’t mean that it’s spiritually appropriate. If I went around doing whatever I thought I could get by with, I’d be a slave to my whims.” Let me ask you, what are you allowing to go into your temple that’s “technically legal”?
I’m not focusing on the area of just what we eat, but also what we drink, smoke, or even hear or see. You might say, with all these “rules” it could cause someone to want to say this is too much for me? When you say “I can’t give up _____” or “God knows me and He knows my struggle and it’s ok for me to _____” what you’re really saying you’re going to be on the throne instead of letting the a Holy Spirit takes His rightful place in your temple. You may be thinking, Really? Isn’t that a bit much? Who are you to judge me? You see, I’m not here to judge you for what ever you might have to clean up (think of this message as the janitor just helping you sweep and dust) and give you a bunch of rules to cramp your style. Instead please know my prayer is that once this series is over you’ll see how precious you are to God and that you’ll see the importance of cleaning up the temple. In fact, you are so very precious to Him and He loves you. When someone loves you so deeply you desire to please them. In your relationship with the Lover of your soul your heart should desire to say, “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right, persevering, and steadfast spirit within me.” Psalm 51:10
We need to grasp the concept that it’s not a bunch of rules of what we can and can’t do or that we have to follow, but it’s the mere privilege that the Holy Spirit resides, makes His home, lives in us as a believer that should cause you to want to do so. Ask yourself what is it that your not being careful of what is going into your body that really doesn’t honor it as a temple?
The wrong food choices? Jesus was tempted in the desert and replied, But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘M an shall not live on bread alone , but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of G od .’” Matthew 4:4 NASB
Do you struggle with smoking? Would you give Jesus a hit?
Is the music you listen to honor Him? Would you listen to “Running with the Devil” or “Highway to Hell” with Jesus?
Do you watch shows, movies or programs that are not something you’d see if Jesus was sitting next to you? Would you watch porn in church?
Do you drink? Would you take a shot of tequila with Jesus?
Would you do any of these with Jesus with you? Umm, guess what if you’re a follower of His, you already are taking Him with you where you go. Am I saying all these are wrong? No, I hope you get my point, and so I’m just going to show you this scripture again and let it be between you and God: “Just because something is technically legal doesn’t mean that it’s spiritually appropriate. If I went around doing whatever I thought I could get by with, I’d be a slave to my whims.”
I don’t know about you, but I do not want to be a slave to my whims. I’ve been there many a times. It’s good to examine ourselves from time to time to see if it’s pleasing to God and glorifying Him anything that is going into our temple. Confess it to Him and ask Him if there is anything offensive to Him that resides in your temple. I know I am. I don’t always like it either, but I know He’ll show you if you’re serious and He’ll help you clean it. You don’t have to clean it up before you ask Him. Isn’t that simply beautiful? Jesus will pick up the broom or dust rag and help you take out the trash. Who doesn’t like help when they are cleaning? So, hand Him the broom. 😉 Why, would He do that? Because You are simply beautiful by His design. So therefore honor Him with what you put into your temple. Because He loves you and if you love Him you’ll want to keep a clean temple.
